Can technology support Rescaled Detention?

Stichting Restorative Justice Nederland is part of a European partnership WISH-EU. WISH-EU stands for Working In Small scale Detention Houses. With this partnership RJN is organizing learning labs as part of the European programme WISH-EU. As part of WISH-EU, on February 7 from 10.00-12.00 Veronique Aicha will moderate an online learning lab about technology in relation to detention houses. She invited me as expert and challenged me to think about technology in the context of RESCALED.

This project is funded by the European Union. Partners in this are RESHAPE, Stichting Restorative Justice Nederland, Prison Insider, FARAPEJ, Vzw De Huizen and RESCALED. One of the goals is to create European Rules of Detention Houses, in addition to the European Prison Rules. Detention houses are small-scale, differentiated and community-integrated. Technology has become an indispensable part of our society. It is completely ingrained into the DNA of the daily life of every human being in our Western society. So how should technology be a part of detention houses and fits their ambition to be community-integrated? We will discuss during this learning lab on February 7th with people from all over Europe how to use these principles as the baseline to start a digital transformation journey.

I already have written some thoughts on this: you can find it on this blog.

Reflecting on Digital Rehabilitation

In a world where technology is advancing at lightning speed, it’s more important than ever to consider how it can support rehabilitation for those who have been incarcerated. However, simply installing new software or hardware isn’t enough to truly transform the rehabilitation process. Instead, we must think holistically about how to transform the environment to match the new digital reality we live in. This involves everything from strategic and legislative changes to developing digital skills and transforming prison culture. Discover how “digital rehabilitation” can support prisoner rehabilitation and increase public safety in this thought-provoking article.
